First, Let’s Learn Some History

Paul founded the church in Philippi while on his “second missionary journey”.
Share historical context of his second missionary journey, some verses
Share why it was important for him to start the church in Philippi
Share the consequences of the church being started at Philippi
The city had important military history as well as current political standing. With the military base, retired soldiers, and governmental allowances, as well as its location on Egnatian Way, Philippi was an urban center in the Roman Empire.
While first in Philippi, Paul shared the gospel with Lydia and her entire household was saved and baptized, starting the Philippian church. Also while in the city, Paul, along with Silas, encountered a fortune-telling enslaved (and unfortunately demon-possessed) young girl, and their interaction with her ultimately led Paul and Silas to become imprisoned. An earthquake enabled Paul and Silas to flee the jail, but the two instead remained and shared the gospel with the jailer, who also believed and became a follower of Jesus along with his entire household. Thus, from “Luke’s description of the events of the mission”, the gospel found a home in the city, which became a “strategic inroad for the gospel in Europe.”
I’m certainly no Philippians expert; but I do know this; that God’s presence is real, available, responsive, and ready to engage with us. Reading Scripture is one way we can experience this powerful, connecting presence of God.
Before you begin this study, I want to make the point clear - to connect with the presence of God. I’ll use some teaching and reflection questions throughout this study to help us, as embodied beings, reflect on this present moment and connect with our Creator. Because I believe this is how change happens - through present moment experiences.
